Travellers To Angola

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

When entering Angola, you will need a vaccination certificate which should show inoculation against yellow fever. You may also need immunizations for hepatitis B and E. There are threats of insect-borne diseases and dengue fever in the country so your health insurance should be comprehensive and must include a medical evaluation policy. Get up to date with your vaccines before traveling to Angola.

Measles Vaccines

Measles is a disease caused by a highly contagious virus. People with measles spread the virus through the air when they cough, sneeze, or breathe.

Infants (6 through 11 months old): 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as the first dose in the routine childhood vaccination series. People 12 months old or older, with no evidence of immunity or no written documentation of any doses: 2 doses of MMR vaccine before travel. The 2 doses must be given 28 days apart. People 12 months old or older who have written documentation of 1 dose and no other evidence of immunity: 1 additional dose before travel, at least 28 days after the previous dose.

Yellow Fever Requirement

  • Yellow fever is a disease caused by a virus that is spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms take 3–6 days to develop and include fever, chills, headache, backache, and muscle aches. About 15% of people who get yellow fever develop serious illness that can lead to bleeding, shock, organ failure, and sometimes death.
  • Required for arriving travelers from all countries if traveler is ≥9 months of age.

    Recommended for all travelers ≥9 months of age.

    Note: Yellow fever vaccine availability in the United States is currently limited. If you need to be vaccinated before your trip, you may need to travel some distance and schedule your appointment well in advance. Find the clinic nearest you.


    Routine Vaccines

    Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.


    Polio Vaccines

    If you were vaccinated against polio as a child but have never had a polio booster dose as an adult, you should get this booster dose. Adults need only one polio booster dose in their lives.

    If you were not completely vaccinated as a child or do not know your vaccination status, talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated.


    Most travelers

    Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting.

    • Hepatitis A: CDC recommends this vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in Angola, regardless of where you are eating or staying.
    • Malaria: You will need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria.     • Typhoid: You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Angola.     Medical facilities and services, including emergency care, are limited outside of Luanda and do not meet developed countries' standards. In the capital, some private clinics offer international standard medical care and 24-hour emergency services including ambulances. Local pharmacies provide a limited supply of medications. Always carry prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Bring preventative and over-the-counter medicines.
